Thinking about adding a bay window to your home? Think again. Bay windows add beauty and architectural interest to your home but they also subtract a lot of money from your bank account. Make sure you know all of the facts about bay windows before you make the investment.
What are Bay Windows?
Bay windows include groups of three or more windows that project outward from the wall of your home. You'll often find these special windows in living rooms and master bedrooms. Bay windows are available in wood, vinyl, and clad styles.
What are the Benefits of Bay Windows?
In addition to adding architectural interest and charm to the inside space, bay windows change the look of your home from the outside, making it more distinctive and unique. Because they combine several windows together, bay windows bring extensive light into the room and create more opportunity to admire the view. Depending on the size and location of the bay windows you choose, you could create a windows seat with storage below or additional counter area for display or entertaining.
When Should You Avoid Bay Windows?
You might want to reconsider installing bay windows if you don't have the budget, the right installer, or the space. These windows may cost you significantly more than standard windows. For example, a typical 3' x 6' bay window might cost in the $800 to $1,100 range. And if you can't locate a contractor experienced in bay window installation--or you don't have the experience yourself--don't risk it. The biggest issue for most homeowners is space, either space on the interior wall or exterior yard. Because bay windows stick out into the yard quite a bit, do not install too close to a walkway or other high traffic area.
Bay windows can be a beautiful, elegant addition to your home. Make sure you understand the implications of your choice and before you get started!
