If you're thinking that kitchen designers are only for the rich and famous, think again. Some home owners who complete moderately priced kitchen renovations use kitchen designers. This type of professional is not for everyone, however. Here's how to know whether to hire one.
The Kitchen Designer's Role
While the terminology may differ, a kitchen designer generally is someone trained to evaluate your kitchen space and create a plan for your kitchen renovation. This can entail everything from just replacing kitchen cabinets to a full-scale kitchen renovation with a family room addition.
Kitchen Cabinet Expertise
One major advantage to using a kitchen designer is that this person has expertise in kitchen space planning. While your contractor will know the construction planning and kitchen cabinet layout, he or she may not be as knowledgeable about:
The Cons
One downside to using a kitchen designer is the cost. You're obviously adding another person and another fee to your kitchen renovation project. If the kitchen designer does not add value beyond what your contractor can offer, you may feel that the money was wasted. Also, you are adding one more person to interview and work with during the kitchen renovation.
If you're doing a small kitchen renovation, then a kitchen designer may not be needed. If your kitchen space planning is complicated ? an irregularly shaped room or a storage challenged space ? then a designer may be well worth the fee.
