Finding the right kitchen designer takes a little detective work. Here are some detailed questions to ask as you interview kitchen designers for your renovation.

- Working with contractors to coordinate the installation

- How many kitchen renovations like ours have you worked on? (Look for expertise with your type of kitchen renovation priorities, whether maximizing storage space or creating a two-person kitchen).
- What construction surprises have you encountered and how did you solve them?
- How do you approach space planning and kitchen cabinet layout? (Look for information about how the designer examines your priorities and how you use your space).
- What new products are available to maximize storage space?
- What is the biggest challenge you see with our kitchen? How would you approach finding a solution?
- What's your approach to working with contractors? (Ask this open-ended question to find out how well the designer works with contractors. Avoid designers who assume they have the last word on the kitchen layout, because give and take with the contractor may be necessary).
- How do you stay within a budget? How do you approach unexpected cost overruns?
