Looking to spruce up your home?
If you've just bought a home or are trying to update the one you've lived in for years, start with a little planning. Make a list of what you want to change. Divide it into long and short-term projects. Remember to plan your colors so they move through the house.
A designer's tip -- You should be able to take an item -- a lamp or rug, for example -- and move it into any room in the house and have it blend in.
Here are some suggestions for some quick, inexpensive ways to update your home:
Paint. Paint. Paint
We can't say enough about it. It is the most inexpensive way to update a home. If you are painting the whole house in stages, make sure you find colors that blend together. Try not to use more than two or three different colors throughout the house. If you like variation, use different shades of each color, but make sure they all blend together! Visit our painting section for more!
Other Tips:
- If you've never painted before, ask a friend to show you the ropes. Maybe you can trade off painting each other's rooms.
- Go to a good paint store at a time when they are not too busy and ask questions.
- Buy good supplies and the best paint you can afford. The job will last longer and the paint will be easier to work with.
- Don't be afraid to try some color!
Pillows, Rugs and Accessories
These accent pieces are great for adding some color and texture to a house. They also allow you to test out some colors before committing to painting or replacing a countertop in a bold color.
Here's how to do it:
- Find colors or textures you like.
- Take some home and live with them for awhile.
- Don't be afraid to try something new.
Lamp shades also are hot right now. Look through home improvement or craft stores for creative ways to design your own. Or, spend $20 on one and give an old lamp new life.
Drapes, Valances and Blinds
Your windows are a major focal point in the house. Look for ways to dress them up with window treatments. There are several books on the market that can show you how to make window coverings without sewing -- just drape fabric over a rod, for example. Visit a craft or fabric store for ideas.
Cabinet Hardware
Replacing cabinet hardware is a very affordable and easy project. Try colorful glass knobs in the bathroom or a colorful Tuscan design in the kitchen. Look through our cabinet section for more on how to use hardware. Click here!
Other Uses for Your Furniture
Refinish an old hutch or paint a dresser and use it in the bathroom. Look through your furniture and find ways to move it around to different rooms. Also visit estate and garage sales for bargain finds.
Replace One Fixture
Try a new light fixture or a new faucet or sink. For $100 to $250 you can dramatically change the look of the room. Make sure it blends with the overall décor, however. See our Selections section for more.
