Start With Kitchen Cabinets

Remodeling contractors typically advise you to order kitchen cabinets first, as they are the most important part of the kitchen design. The cabinets often take 6 to 8 weeks to arrive. You don't want to have your kitchen torn apart and then have to wait for the cabinets to arrive.

Kitchen Cabinet Styles

The kitchen cabinet style will set the tone for the kitchen design and influence the following selections:
  • Countertop - whether you want a coordinating or contrasting color.
  • Floor material - whether you use the same wood species or go with ceramic tile to add texture.
  • Wall tile - can be used to accent the cabinet wood species or make its own bold statement
  • Kitchen appliances - the number and size of appliances will go hand in hand with the cabinet layout.

When ordering kitchen cabinets remember to:
  • Take appliances into account. If you want a 48-inch commercial range, you'll need to have the contractor layout the space for it.
  • Order any decorative molding, toe kicks or panels to enclose a refrigerator. This way the wood will match.

Choosing the Kitchen Countertop

The kitchen countertop material should be selected next, as it is an integral part of the overall cabinet design. Depending on the material, the lead-times might vary from a 2 to 6 weeks. Some colors and patterns are considered "in stock," while others require a special order. Ask your remodeling contractor for details.

The Kitchen Sink

The kitchen sink often is ordered with the countertop, as they must fit together. Remember to look for a sink that mounts correctly with the countertop material. For example:
  • With a laminate countertop, you need a sink that mounts over the counter.
  • With granite countertops, you can add an undermounted sink, which many people prefer because you can sweep dirt right from the countertop into the sink.

Kitchen Appliances

Many kitchen appliances can be delivered within a week, but there are some that require a longer lead-time. Before ordering, find out when the contractor will need them. This way you can avoid having to store them around your house until the kitchen space is ready.
