Creating a Landscaping Plan

It’s finally time to upgrade the landscaping. How
should you approach it?
Begin by deciding on an overall plan for the yard.
What do you want to change? What will you keep the same? Even if you will be
changing the landscaping in stages, this approach will help ensure that
sections of the yard blend together.
Among the issues to consider are:
- How
do you use your yard -- casual entertaining, kid's play, a garden
showcase?
- How
much space do you want for flowers, shrubs and trees?
- Do
you want added privacy from a fence or large trees/shrubs?
- Do
you want a deck or patio? What’s the best location for it?
- How
much grass do you want?
- Will
you be adding a swing set or a pond?
Then look at the characteristics of your yard. Think about:
- Which
parts of the yard get sun, shade or a mixture of both?
- How
is the drainage? Do parts of the yard retain water more readily
than others?
- Is
the terrain smooth, sloping or a combination of both?
To create a balanced landscaping design:
- Decide
on a theme or style for the yard -- formal or informal; bold colors or
lots of greenery?
- Look
for plants that you like that will blend together or create an interesting
contrast in size, texture and foliage
- Think
about structure – do you like a lot of structure or a more natural, wild
prairie look?
Then think about your budget. How much work can you do
right away and what projects will be added in a few months or a year?
