How Much Will Kitchen Remodeling Cost?

This is probably the first question many homeowners will ask. A remodeling contractor can give you a general range, but the variables include:
  • The size of the kitchen
  • The type of kitchen cabinets and appliances--these two products tend to add the most to the remodeling costs, so scaling back on either one can reduce the cost significantly
  • How many structural changes you plan to make--if you have to move walls around or add onto the space, then the remodeling costs can rise dramatically
  • Labor costs in your area

In general, kitchen remodeling can cost:
  • $10,000 to $20,000 to replace the kitchen cabinets, countertops, and other products with economical materials
  • $20,000 to $40,000 for mid-range products and perhaps some reconfiguring of the kitchen layout
  • $40,000 to $80,000 or more for a gourmet kitchen with semi-custom to custom cabinets and commercial appliances

How Long Will the Project Take?

A kitchen remodeling project can last from six weeks to several months, depending on the number of structural changes and other factors. If you are just replacing the kitchen cabinets, countertop, floor, sink and other products--without changing the cabinet layout or tearing down walls--the work might be finished in six to eight weeks. If the kitchen remodeling includes a breakfast room addition, the work can last for six to eight months or more.

How Much Lead Time Do I Need when Ordering Products?

The answer will vary based on the product. It's wise to order kitchen cabinets and any specialty tile as soon as you can, as these products can take six to eight weeks or longer. Discuss this with your remodeling contractor early on to make sure all the products will be ready when the contractor is.

During the Remodeling, How Do We Function without a Kitchen?

Ideally, you should find a room you can use as a temporary kitchen. The remodeling contractor can move the refrigerator, microwave and coffee pot to that room. You'll also need a place to wash dishes. Other tips include:
  • Use paper plates and napkins, and plastic utensils
  • Try to time your project during warm weather so you can grill outdoors
  • Freeze meals ahead of time so you can reheat them
