Some people enjoy redoing furniture with worn finishes. Most people have little or no experience in such work, and limited success if they have tried it. If you're refacing cabinets, most likely you're ordering new doors. Now, what to do about the cabinet cases?

Options for Cabinet Case Refacing

Cabinet refacing is a cost-saving method of revitalizing your kitchen. Should you do it yourself or have it done? Here are your options:

  1. Do it yourself choices: If you can handle the sanding, staining and sealing of the cases, remove them and take them to a well-lit, very well ventilated area. Have a new door in hand for exact matching, or apply a slightly darker but complementary tone. Another option is to get matching laminate material from the door manufacturer and apply it yourself. A third option is to sand the cases and paint them a color that lets the new wood doors take center stage.
  2. Professional refacing options: In a very short time span, often not more than two or three days, the refacing company can do any of the options that a skilled do-it-yourselfer can do. When the new doors and drawer fronts arrive they'll remove the cabinets cases or leave them in place, depending on the option chosen. They'll refinish, paint, or laminate to match or complement the new doors. Then they'll reinstall the cases and attach the hardware and doors.

Refacing your cabinet cases yourself can seem like a never-ending project. It disrupts the use of your kitchen for days or weeks, depending on your available time. If you hire the job done, you can withhold payment until you're satisfied. Experiment with a discarded cupboard, or splurge on the cabinet case refacing cost and save elsewhere.
