If you are starting a kitchen remodeling, you probably know about all the typical home improvement costs -- the contractor, the kitchen cabinets, the granite countertop, and the floor tile. What you may not realize is that there often are hidden costs that often are unavoidable. Consider these common stumbling blocks:
Be sure to set up a time table for the remodeling with extra time factored in to help account for some delays. With a little forethought, you can save yourself quite a few headaches and money down the road.
Delays Can Lead to Increased Costs
No kitchen remodeling project proceeds without some delay. Because there are so many people and parts fitting together in a schedule, it is common for something to be delayed. A few examples:- The lumber yard is late delivering materials, so the contractor cannot start on time.
- The kitchen sink you ordered was on "back order" and will be three weeks later than planned. This means you have to reschedule the plumber who will install it.
- The kitchen cabinets arrive with scratches on some doors, so cabinets have to be ordered.
- The architect makes mistakes in the kitchen remodeling plans, which lead to longer review time from the municipality. This then leads to a crunch to get work done before winter starts. Some contractors and suppliers will charge a premium if pushed to overtime and weekend work.
How Delays Affect Your Bottom Line
Time is money, especially with kitchen remodeling. A few small delays might not be noticed, but when you get into a week here and there, the delays will add up to extra costs.- If you are using a home improvement loan, you might pay a little more in interest.
- If you are taking days off from work to help with remodeling, the delays will cost you vacation time.
- If the kitchen remodeling contractor is delayed because of other vendors and he has no other projects to work on, he might charge you for his time.
Be sure to set up a time table for the remodeling with extra time factored in to help account for some delays. With a little forethought, you can save yourself quite a few headaches and money down the road.
