Beautiful Kitchen Cabinets, Inside and Out
Renovators Place Columnist

I recently had the opportunity to help a friend christen her new kitchen cabinets. She'd been talking about this remodel for months and was eager to show it off. Her wooden cabinets were cherry with a rich Cordovan finish--truly stunning, but I have no doubt she paid dearly for these beauties. While I wasn't surprised by the aesthetic quality of her cabinets, I was ultimately disappointed. Sure, her kitchen cabinets looked good, but as we began cooking, the cabinet design left much to be desired. They simply lacked organization.

Cabinets: Functionality First
Sometimes homeowners, bleary-eyed after the renovation process, find themselves disappointed by its outcome. When it comes to kitchen cabinets, good looks aren't enough. You need fuss-free access to dishes, spices, appliances, pots, and pans. To put it simply: when you've got kitchen cabinet space un-mediated by organizational helpers, you've got a recipe for disaster.Clever Cabinet Storage Solutions
Cabinet designers have come up with some great space-savers. Some of the designs are so perfectly logical that we wonder why we never thought of them before. Others take a little getting used to. Either way, if you're in the mood to organize the abyss of your kitchen cabinetry, here are a few worth considering.- Slotted Base-Cabinet Drawer: Higher cabinets always fill-up first. Use the slotted pull-out drawer in a base cabinet to store dishes vertically, preventing breakage.
- Under-sink Organizer: The space below the sink might as well be the Bermuda Triangle for some homeowners. This organizer provides drawers for storing small items on the top, and larger ones on the bottom.
- Pullout Pilaster: Take advantage of the space between large appliances and cabinets. A narrow pullout pilaster can conceal hanging towels and oven mitts.
