Bathroom Lighting -- How Much and What Type

Bathroom lighting is important, not only for its
design, but for its function. Here are some ways to avoid inadequate lighting,
shadows and lights that are not focused in the right areas.
How Much Lighting?
This depends on the size of the bathroom and how
many separate areas you have. In general, you need separate lighting in these
areas:
- bathtub
or shower - one fixture in ceiling
- main
ceiling area -- rectangular lights or cans
- vanity
-- sconces work well
- dressing
area -- can be overhead of around makeup mirror area
- toilet
area if it is separated from main area
The key to finding the right amount of light for a room is to ensure that you have fixtures for each area of the bathroom. Also consider how much the room will be used and by whom. If it's a powder room, you want to keep it with minimal light because no one's shaving or putting on makeup there. If it's a main bathroom, you want to make sure you have enough light.
Focusing the Light
Also think about where you will be standing when
using the light. You don't want your main vanity light to be behind you and
overhead, as this will cause shadows and you will be blocking the light. Instead
put it in front of you at the top of the mirror, for example.
Chandeliers and Sconces
While chandeliers are more commonly used in dining rooms, they can add a more formal or decorative touch in the entrance to a master bathroom or near a whirlpool tub.
Sconces often are placed on each side of a mirror to help frame the space. They focus light up or down, depending upon the design. A decorative glass or fabric cover can be placed over each bulb to soften the glow of light and blend the sconce design with the bathroom decor.
Some renovators are using wall sconces or chandeliers to compliment tumbled marble floors or to create a focal point in one section of the bathroom.
Dimmer Switches
Many lights are connected through dimmer switches, as renovators look for flexibility in lighting the room. These switches allow you to change the intensity of the light for shaving or applying makeup, for example, or soaking in a hot tub. They are available through home improvement and hardware stores.
