Replacing windows can seem like an overwhelming task, mostly because so many window replacement options are available. You can choose from countless window styles, and each can serve a different function, from the classic double-hung option to the more modern slider windows.
You also have a choice of glazing, which can encompass everything from the number of panes you choose to the newer self-cleaning windows. You can even opt for windows made of clear plastic and thick glass, which results in an unbreakable window that can withstand hurricane force winds.
3 Ways to Window Replacement
No matter the style or function of the window you choose, you have three basic options when it comes time for window replacement:
- Replace the sashes only. Affordable and easy to install, simply replacing the sashes on your windows leaves everything else in place. The new sashes are mounted on plastic tracks that attach to the existing side jambs.
- Insert a new frame and sash. This is the easiest way to install new windows, but it is also the most expensive option. Frames are fitted with sashes in the factory and then shipped to you, ready to be inserted into the original sills and jambs.
- Replace the full frame. The full frame window replaces everything, including sills and jambs. It's the most energy efficient option, but it does require the removal of trim, and possibly siding as well. Professional window installation is best for full replacement, because it is difficult and time-consuming.
Your method of replacing windows depends on your budget and the condition of your existing windows. Ask for a professional evaluation before you make your final decision on window replacement.
