Avoiding Common Kitchen Remodeling Mistakes

Dreaming about remodeling your outdated kitchen? Without proper planning, turning your dated, cramped cooking space into your dream kitchen can quickly become a home improvement nightmare.

Here are a few tips to help ensure that your kitchen remodeling project goes as smoothly as possible.

Think Form and Function

When it comes to choosing appliances, sinks, faucets, countertops and cabinetry, it is important to not only keep in mind how these elements will look in your new kitchen, but how they will work for you. For example, while some homeowners enjoy the convenience of having a dedicated hot water tap or a second sink for doing prep work, if you do a good deal of baking or have a lot of pantry items, you may prefer having larger counter tops or additional storage. Understanding how you use your kitchen--or intend to use your kitchen--can go a long way toward ensuring that your remodeling project is a success.

Make Sure Your Remodeling Plans Measure Up

One of the easiest ways to ensure a hassle-free kitchen remodeling job is to use your tape measure. Many homeowners make the mistake of not properly planning enough space for their kitchen appliances, which can add substantially to the cost of your remodeling project. When it comes to measuring for appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens and stoves, don't just measure the width of the appliance, measure the depth and height as well. After all, there's nothing worse that choosing your hi-tech stove only to realize that it sticks out into the middle of a major walkway or that your brand new fridge doesn't fit under your existing cabinetry.

Road Test Your Kitchen Remodeling Materials

Before choosing a particular countertop or flooring material, it's a good idea to take it for a test drive. Be sure and take samples home to see if they will "work" in your home and stand up to anything you can dish out.

Finally, one of the best ways to ensure a hassle-free remodel is to hire a professional who has experience in planning kitchen remodeling projects.
