Replacement windows can make a dramatic difference in the way your house looks, feels, and functions. They are a major home improvement investment, however, and can be tricky to buy. There are so many styles, materials, and features that it pays to do your research first. When buying replacement windows, try to avoid these common mistakes:
Buying on Impulse -- You go to a local home improvement show, talk with a contractor, fall in love with the display windows and sign a contract. By not comparing, you risk buying windows that do not offer the features you need--and might be too costly. You don't lose by shopping around.
Buying the Cheapest Replacement Windows in the Store -- While it pays to shop around, don't make your decisions based on price alone. The cheapest windows might not offer the insulation quality you want or a style to match your home's architecture. Windows are meant to be a long-term investment, so look for ones that will last.
Buying the Wrong Style Window For Your Home -- Replacement windows should look like they came with the house. When replacing just a few windows, use the same style as your other windows. Look for details, such as grille patterns, stained glass, and sidelights that complement other features in your house.
Hiring the Wrong Contractor -- Make sure the contractor you hire has experience installing replacement windows. This is a project that requires good carpentry skills and planning ability. Ask how long the contractor has been installing windows. Also ask to call and visit references.
Buying replacement windows can be complicated, especially if you are trying to match the details found in an old house. With a little research and legwork, however, you can find the best replacement window for your house and budget.
