Looking for a new look for your kitchen countertop
Looking for a new look for your kitchen countertop? Soapstone is quickly becoming a hit with those who want a rustic or antique style.
Soapstone is a natural product like marble and granite and has been around for hundreds of years. It initially has a talc like color to it, then naturally darkens over time, taking on a rich, charcoal gray coloring. While most soapstone has a consistent coloring, some has veins, like marble, that enhance its coloring and richness.
Where to Use It
The most popular applications for soapstone are:
· kitchen sinks and countertops
· bathroom sinks and countertops
· fireplace surrounds
Characteristics of Soapstone
In addition to its natural look, soapstone:
· is a very durable natural product
· is easy to work with; sinks and countertops can be customized to meet many design specifications
· it doesn't stain
· a soapstone hearth or fireplace surround will absorb heat and keep a room warmer
One Disadvantage
Soapstone requires some maintenance during the first 12-18 months. It should be "cured" regularly with mineral oil, regardless of where it is used. Monthly applications of oil are recommended for up to 18 months. Thereafter, "regular" applications are suggested. It can be cleaned with most kitchen or bathroom products.
What About Scratches?
The oil helps to protect the soapstone and in the process helps to create a deep, rich color. Should the soapstone get scratched, fine sandpaper will work the scratch out and create a smooth surface.
Though it has the appearance of slate or quartzite, Soapstone is much softer. And, it will acquire a patina over time.
The finish of soapstone is a very smooth, eggshell-like finish. This rich coloring, along with its unique veining and silky smooth finish make it a classic countertop material. Typically, soapstone is available in large slab sizes up to 8 or 9 feet long with widths ranging from 4 to 5 feet.
The Cost
$65 to $110 per square foot, installed.
