Adding an Island -- Consider the Room Layout

Your Room Layout
As you debate whether to add an island, take a look at the room layout. The size and shape of the room will help dictate the island size.
- If the kitchen is a rectangular shape, the island should have a similar shape
- If the room is square, look for a square island
- Overall, make sure the shape flows with the lines of the room
In a large kitchen with a breakfast nook, a desk area and a pantry, the island might be an octagon or a wide "U" shape.
What About Dimensions?
A square island often is 3 feet by 3 feet, while a rectangular island is 2 feet by 4 feet or 2 feet by 6 feet.
Create Ample Room
When designing an island it is important to ensure that the size is proportional to the room and that there is ample room for walking around it and opening cabinet and appliance doors.
Make sure there is at least a three-foot walking area around the island. This will prevent someone from having to squeeze between the opened refrigerator door and the island countertop. An island shouldn’t impair traffic nor make it difficult to get to your appliances.
