Adding a Swimming Pool

If your kids are pushing for a backyard swimming pool, you may be tempted to take the plunge. But before committing to this type of home improvement project, take time to understand what's involved.
Swimming Pools Add Recreation and Upkeep
Swimming pools are large structures that can dramatically change how you use your backyard. When considering all the fun you will have with a pool, think about:
- How often you will use the swimming pool. Are you around the house during warm weather months, or do you travel frequently? You want to spend enough time with the pool to make the investment worthwhile.
- The age of your children--small children should be watched closely anytime they are around a pool. Even kids who know how to swim should be supervised.
Where Will the Swimming Pool Go?
Perhaps the most important consideration when building a swimming pool is the location. Check with your local building department to see if there are any zoning restrictions and if your backyard is large enough for a pool. Then consider:
- The terrain of your backyard
- Whether you will have to tear out a patio or backyard landscaping to fit the pool--remember that some landscaping might get ruined from the heavy equipment needed to dig a space for the pool
- The size and shape of the swimming pool
When considering a swimming pool, also take into account the maintenance and costs. There are:
- Swimming pool chemicals to buy and add
- Furniture for around the swimming pool deck
- Regular cleaning, both with a swimming pool vacuum and a net to scoop debris
- The cost to redo backyard landscaping
Swimming Pool Fences
To help ensure safety around the swimming pool, many homeowners add a fence. This can be a metal or wooden structure and should be high enough to deter anyone from climbing over it. A fence will help add privacy, as well as help keep uninvited children from entering the pool.
A swimming pool is a major investment--often $25,000 or more--and one that should be considered carefully. Aside from all the recreational benefits, weigh the investment of time and upkeep before taking the plunge.
