Most of us don't think about our boiler or other heating system until winter rolls around. Getting a professional inspection during the late summer months is always a good idea, because it can help you catch problems with your boiler before the frigid cold sets in.
Facts About Boiler Replacement
What if your inspector finds a problem and your boiler needs to be replaced? It's good to know how much it will cost and what you can expect from the replacement.
- First things first: The cost. If you are replacing your boiler with a mid-efficiency one, you might pay $2,500 to $4,000 for a new unit. A high-efficiency boiler is about twice that, at $5,000 to $9,000. If you need a new fuel tank, removing one from a basement can run up to $1,500, while removing one that has been buried underground can start between $1,500 and $3,000 and go up from there. If you must install a new chimney liner, you might pay between $300 and $700 for a gas model, and $700 to $1,800 for a model that burns fuel.
- Some local areas require a fire inspection of a new heating system. You might also be required to get a permit before installing your new boiler. However, your utility company might offer rate incentives or discounts if you opt for a high-efficiency boiler. Make a phone call or two and ask plenty of questions.
- Expect the installation to take at least a few days, possibly a week. You might be without heat during this time, so make the proper arrangements to keep your home warm, or to spend time elsewhere while the work is being done. If the job is done in the summer, it can save you some time and sanity.
- Research major manufacturers and get several estimates from reputable installation companies. Check references, check the Better Business Bureau, and ask about their licenses, insurance, and credentials. Speak with a contractor to make certain you are getting the proper size boiler for your home. Too small means not enough heat, but too large can mean your home gets uncomfortably warm during the winter.
Replacing your boiler can be a quite expensive prospect, but the good news is that with proper maintenance, a new boiler system can last for decades. Since it is such a big investment, buy smart by doing your homework long before you need to write out that check for your new boiler system.
